Ozempic®, Wegovy®, and Mounjaro® for Weight Loss: What You Need to Know

By Dr. Kaisa Schmitz, Revive Health Medical Weight Loss & Wellness

GLP-1 medications like Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Zepbound, and Mounjaro® are getting a lot of attention, and for good reason. Originally designed to treat type 2 diabetes, these medications are now widely prescribed for weight loss and other medical conditions. But how do they actually work? And more importantly, are they right for you?

At Revive Health Medical Weight Loss & Wellness, we believe in clear, science-based answers. Here's what you need to know about GLP-1 medications, the weight loss results people are seeing, and whether this might be the right solution for your health journey.

What Are GLP-1 Medications?

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone your body naturally produces. Its job is to recognize when you have eaten, help regulate blood sugar by increasing insulin production, and slowing down how fast your stomach empties. This creates a feeling of fullness, or satiety, after meals.

Medications like Ozempic® and Wegovy® (semaglutide), Mounjaro® and Zepbound® (tirzepatide, which also targets another hormone called GIP), are synthetic versions of these hormones. They mimic the effects of GLP-1 to reduce appetite, prolong fullness, and promote more stable blood sugar levels.

How Do These Medications Help with Weight Loss?

Here’s the science: GLP-1 medications work by reducing hunger signals in the brain, amplifying fullness signals, controlling blood sugar responses, and slowing digestion, helping you feel full with less food. As a result, most patients naturally eat fewer calories without having to rely solely on willpower or crash dieting.

In clinical trials:

  • Wegovy® and Ozempic® users lost an average of 15% of their body weight. Wegovy has also been FDA approved to treat Heart Disease, Peripheral Artery Disease, and Stroke risk, due to significant benefit for these conditions, even before significant weight loss is achieved.

  • Zepbound® and Mounjaro® showed even higher weight loss potential (up to 22%) in some studies, as well as significant improvement in Sleep Apnea symptoms.

Who Qualifies for GLP-1 Treatment?

These medications aren't for everyone,  but they are a powerful option for many. At Revive Health Medical Weight Loss & Wellness, we look at the full picture of your health to determine if you qualify.

In general, GLP-1 medications may be prescribed if:

  • Your BMI is 30 or higher (obesity), or

  • Your BMI is 27+ with at least one weight-related condition (like high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes)

Are There Side Effects?

Like any medication, GLP-1s can have side effects. The most common include nausea, constipation, or mild digestive upset, especially in the first few weeks. These usually decrease over time.

Our team closely monitors your progress and adjusts your dose as needed. We also combine medication with nutrition coaching and lifestyle support to maximize results and keep side effects minimal.
